After being a dream of many years, The Frymonger came into existence after the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic severely affected the hospitality industry. Chef-owner Matt never experienced a lack of job security in his 20 years working in restaurants around the country. When we were all told what the restrictions on restaurants would be at various alert levels he said to himself “My food caravan idea could still be operating.”
So he got to building. Over the course of 6 months, he completely renovated a 1960s Zephyr caravan into The Frymonger. The quirky food caravan brings restaurant quality, fast and affordable food to various locations around Oamaru. Matt makes the majority of products himself, and sources fresh seafood and produce as locally as possible.
Matt is joined in the kitchen by partner Susan, with their small fry putting in occasional appearances behind the scenes and on social media. Together, the family are pushing takeaways to the next level by bringing Matt’s experience at places like Riverstone and Fleur’s Place to his own kitchen.
